Luxembourg's Castles - Whole and in Ruins

vianden castle luxembourg
Vienden Castle, Luxembourg's Favorite

Vianden Castle is likely the most popular castle you can visit in Luxembourg, which is dotted with castles and evocative castle ruins. The castle and the town of Viaden are combined into a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The castle was built atop a Roman site between the 11th and 14th centuries. It lay in ruins until it fell under State ownership in 1977 and was restored.

Château de Beaufort, beaufort castle
Château de Beaufort Ruins

Beaufort Castle began as an 11th century fortress in the town of Beaufort. What you see today (and can visit) are the ruins of the medieval fortress and an adjacent Renaissance château. The fortress was enlarged several times before the fortress fell to ruins, and a walk through them is akin to walking through a whale skeleton, with the hard, well-engineered bits standing all around you.

Enjoy Luxembourg's many castles, and the summer weather is fantastic for visiting this almost-forgotten country.
