Gstaad-Saanenland is a famous resort area in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. The map shows the alpine terrain found in the area, perfect for ski and snowboarding, hiking, or even snow golf (in February). It is about a 30 minute walk from Gstaad to Saanen.
Gstaad Travel Toolbox
Gstaad has quite a reputation for fine dining in addition to the spa and winter sports, making it a magnet for jet setters. But you can get away, and you can even golf in the snow.
In summer, there are lots of mountain walks you can take. A classic guide for walking is Walking Easy in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. A popular thing to do is to take the cable car up to Gstaad's local mountain, the Wispile, and hike back down, or continue on the high trail to Lake Lauenen.
Getting There
One of the reasons for Gstaad's popularity is that it's very easy to get to, even from Geneva Airport. All you need to do is to get to Montreaux (marked on the map) and change for the train to Gstaad. It's an hour and 5 minutes on the train. You save three minutes by driving. Either way, the journey is scenic all the way.
Where to Stay
Gstaad is overflowing with good places to stay. The highly rated Wander & Gourmet Hotel Bernerhof combines my two favorite vacation themes, and is in an excellent location. Massages are available upon request at the Huus Gstaad, and there's a children´s spa as well as a garden playground.
