Traveler tips--Saving money in an Expensive City

There's no need to pretend: Copenhagen is one expensive city. But there are a few budget-conscious activities pointed out by writer and translator C. H. Kwak.

  1. Tour by a self-proclaimed nerd
Historian Nina Søndergaard leads a walking guide called Nerd Tours through the city that provides historic backgrounds to the sights.
  2. Anarchy alive
Europe's last stronghold of anarchy is also a surprisingly delightful commune of Christiana, where a self-governing community thrives. Despite its unruly reputation, this is a great place to see a free-spirited side of Copenhagen.
  3. Winning wieners
Hot dog stands are everywhere when you're in a popular area, like near the Nørreport station. For less than $3, you can rub shoulders with the locals and have a hot dog topped with goodies.
  4. Drinking Cheap
Alcohol remains an expensive indulgence in Scandinavia, but some exceptions exist. One of them is Bobi Bar (Klareboderne 14), where the old (its history) meets the new (the bohemian crowd). Or, if you happen to be in Copenhagen, on the first Friday of November, you're in luck--beer maker Tuborg releases its yearly Christmas brew on this day, handing out cans and cans of beer on the street for free.
